Individual Doctoral Training

In Germany, it is by far most common to pursue a doctorate as an individual working with a doctoral supervisor. In this structure, the doctoral candidate is not required to complete a program of courses and seminars alongside his or her dissertation.

In principle, individual doctoral training can be carried out in all of the disciplines offered at Heidelberg University. A university degree with a good to very good final result as well as a letter of acceptance from a doctoral supervisor are the basic requirements for admission as a doctoral candidate.
